The FAO Codex Alimentarius Commission defines honey as'the natural sweet substance produced by honeybees from the nectar of flowers or from secretions coming from living organisms feeding on plants, that bees collect, transform and unite with particular ingredients, shop and leave to ripen from the combs of the hive.'

In Ayurveda honey is popularly known as as"Madhu". Its qualities are clarified as follows.

"Vaatalam genius sheetam cha raktapittakaphapaham |

Sandhatru cchedanam ruksham kashayam madhuram madhu ||"

"It's sweetness (madhura rasa) with additional astringent as finish preference (Kashaya and rasa). It's thick (guru guna), dry (rush) and chilly (sheeta). Its impact doses is as follows It aggravates vata, scratches alpha and normalizes pitta and data. It promotes recovery procedure."

The contents of Honey are

1. Sugars like sugar, fructose, sucrose, maltose, lactose and other disaccharides and trisaccharides.

2. Proteins, vitamins, antioxidants, enzymes, minerals and amino acids,

3. Volatile aromatic compounds.

4. Ashes and water .

A variety of ingredients of honey also have helped it to become not just a candy liquid but also a pure product with high medicinal and nutritional value.

The medicinal grade, flavor, texture, colour, odor of honey is different according to the geographic region and the species of plants where it's been collected.

Different types of Honey:

Eight kinds of honey are explained in ayurveda based on the sort of bee that collects it. They're Pouttika,Bhramara.Kshoudra, Makshika, Chatra, Arghya,Oudalaka,Cal.

Pouttika -- This honey is gathered by huge bees from the nectar of blossoms that are poisonous. It increases vata, causes gout and burning sensation in chest.It can be sedative and reduces weight.



Bhramara -- This honey is gathered by large bees and bees in character.

Kshoudra -- (Honey gathered by moderate sized honey bees) cold and light in nature. Dissolves Kapha.

Makshika -- (Honey gathered by little honey bees) quite mild and tender nature. Usefull in VataKapha ailments and kapha ailments

Chatra -- Heavy and cold in character useful in gout, Leucoderma (Shwitra),



Arghya -- Great for eyes but triggers arthritis.

Oudalaka -- Useful in the skin diseases and aids in modulation of the voice.

Dala -- Dry and reduces nausea.

Amongst all of the aforementioned"Makshika" is thought of as the ideal form with medicinal properties that are enormous.

Therapeutic uses of Honey:

1. Since it contains sugars that are quickly consumed by our digestive tract and converted to energy, this may be applied as immediate energizer.

2. Since it's hygroscopic it accelerate recovery, growth of recovery tissue and dries up it.

3. Honey acts as a stimulant and is quite usefull in bed wetting ailments.

4. Honey is quite great antioxidant which restores skin and provides soft, youthful appearances.

5. Honey has antibacterial properties because of the acidic character and enzymically generated hydrogen peroxide.

6. Constant use of honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacteria and viral infections.

In Ashtanga Hridaya that the fantastic classic of ayurveda, the therapeutic uses of honey have been clarified as follows.

"Chakshushayam Chedi tritshleshmavishahidmaasrapittanut |

Mehakushtakrimicchardishwaasakaasaatisaarajit ||

Vranashodhana sandhaanaropanam vaatalam madhu ||"
